Whiplash Compensation Claims
Whiplash is a non-medical term used to describe neck pain resulting from an injury to the soft tissues of the neck, ligaments, tendons and muscles. Whiplash is a very common injury caused from a high speed impact or a forceful jerk. Most whiplash injuries are caused when a car rams into the back of your car, or rear-ends your car. The actual impact pushes your car forward and it takes a while for your body to catch up. When the car or impact suddenly stops, it throws your head and neck backwards and this is the classic cause of whiplash. A lot of people who are involved in rear end collisions experience whiplash or the symptoms of whiplash.

Doctors may use more specific terms like cervical sprain, or hyperextension injury. There are different degrees of whiplash:
- Grade 1 strain is where there is less than 5% damage to individual muscle fibres. This is quite a mild strain and recovery should be within 2 to 3 weeks rest.
- Grade 2 strains is where there is more extensive damage, with more muscle fibres involved, although the muscle is not completely ruptured. Recovery is usually between 3 and 6 weeks with plenty of rest.
- Grade 3 strains are where a complete rupture of a muscle occurs. In a sports person this will usually require surgery to repair the muscle. The rehabilitation time is around 3 months or more.
